Thanks, Rebecca-FREYjA! Opinionated, possibly contrary - really?! And that long? I think I should say something here like, I’m so happy to have you in my life. Also: that Siren book - is it time yet? A lot of potential there.
Oh wow! Yet another invaluable idea/ inspiration/enlightening shove from you, dear Andrew. I remember how we met...now nervous I was to speak up in your lecture at the York Writers Festival (over a decade ago now!). I remember how readily you picked up my comment - probably opinionated / possibly contrary - and flew with it. I remember afterwards I came to the podium and we chatted and ping! the light flashed on and our chat still hasn't ended. And nor has the Siren book...
Love these two lines so much!
"I remember jumping into piles of leaves and the dust, or whatever it is, that rises.
I remember raking leaves but I don’t remember burning leaves. I don’t remember what we ‘did’ with them."
Evocative and mysterious and full of wonder and nostalgia.
Funny: I nearly pruned those as the opening lines of the example as I thought they were a mouthful!
You mentioned how they take us back and inward - now I’m wondering how we might also remember the future: front and forward. Will add that idea too.
