This morning, I woke up thinking of the dialogue in The Sun Also Rises. I was in conversation with someone about it in my half-waking state. I guess it must have been you hashtag great minds.

Love the idea of concentrating on saving up the juicy bits for direct speech and letting a narrator do the rest!

Try that exercise of using just a couple of extracts of direct speech in a longer conversation. It doesn't always fit every context, but it can be very effective in others.

Love the discussion of indirect speech featuring Márquez and Bobbie Louise Hawkins. I think those two would have had some great conversations and I'd read about them in director or indirect speech! Maybe a blend of both like the ones you describe. Ha ha!

And of course Bobbie did all that amazing direct speech too in eg Back To Texas.

I think getting the blend right is key - knowing when to use each is a really deft skill.
